World Mental Health Day 2020

10 October marks World Mental Health Day. The topic of mental health is incredibly varied, and it cuts across myriad of factors, from the socioeconomic to the environmental.

SUSS Library wants to mark this by day taking closer look at World Mental Health Day, as well as highlighting some of the resources on this topic that you could use to expand your own research.

What is Mental Health Day?

As the World Health Organisation defines it, mental health is a state of well-being, and having the ability to cope with the normal stresses or life, work productively, and make a contribution to your community. This year’s World Mental Health Day (WMHD) is tied to the COVID-19 pandemic. As the WHO notes, there is significant disruption to our lives, and increased stressors: the pandemic has increased the fear of uncertainty and the unknown, and various worries.

Raising awareness for mental health is particularly important, given that poor mental health can be fatal: according to the WHO, suicide is the second leading cause of death amongst 15 to 29-year-olds globally in 2016.

Taking a mental health day means taking time off from work, and taking a sick day to rest from burnout and stress, rather than physical illness. Feeling well-rested (that is, getting more sleep) can increase your productivity and happiness. If you were to think of yourself as a lumberjack, pausing once in a while to sharpen your axe is just as important, and can help you go further.

What’s being done?

              The WMHD attempts to get countries to invest in their mental health services. Other than raising awareness, it also aims to reduce stigma associated with mental health issues.

              In Singapore, a mental health taskforce has been created to track the psycho-social impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the population, and to better address the population’s mental health needs.

Mental Wellness

Just like we take care of our bodies, we must also take care of our minds. You can check out the Singapore Association of Mental Health website to pick up more tips on mental wellness. They have suggested the following:

  • Learn to be at peace with yourself, get to know who you are and what makes you happy;
  • Identify your abilities and weaknesses, accept them, build on them, and do the best with what you have;
  • Pay attention to your own needs and feelings, express your thoughts through a journal or blog to understand more about yourself;
  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle, take balanced meals, exercising regularly, building strong relationships.
